Susanne Sensei vs. Jet Lag

After a long flight and crossing the date line, you’d think that I would just collapse on the comfortable Keio Plaza bed. But no, it’s time to fight off that jet lag in order to survive the long days ahead at Orientation. Roommates and hotel room neighbours: Zoe, Robin, Sarah and Lindsey and I wandered out in search of some authentic Japanese food. I played tour guide a little leading them over to wards the East Exit of the station. There’s more restaurants and action over that side of Shinjuku. Keio Plaza is on the west side of the station though so it was a little farther to go but worth it. We happened upon a busy kaiten zushi restaurant.

The staff was accommodating and I sat beside a nice looking family. The son who looked about 8 years old must have heard me speaking Japanese and asked me to how to say sardines in Japanese. If you’re wondering it’s iwashi. However, this little boy had a Canadian accent. Huh? Turns out the family is moving back to HK from Canada and their sushi-loving son was born in Vancouver. After carefully choosing my kaiten zushi, I ran into another Vancouver group that was going to Karaoke. I did a 180 and joined them. We got through 8 songs in 30 minutes, how you might ask? Johnny Cash songs are short. The track listing:

1. Sweet Child of Mine
2. Sweet Caroline
3. Since You’ve Been Gone
4. All I Wanna Do
5. Ring of Fire
6. Folsom Prison
7. First Love
8. Chain of Fools

In the battle of jet lag, Susanne Sensei wins. I managed to stay out until 11:00 pm on more than 24 hrs without sleep.
